GESB Super Advice
Your GESB Super Works Differently – And That’s an Opportunity
If you’ve built your career in the West Australian public sector, your superannuation is likely to be more valuable and more unusual than the standard funds most Australians hold. GESB’s older schemes carry features that simply don’t exist elsewhere in the market, and the right decisions around them can shape your entire retirement.
At LIFE Financial Planners in West Perth, we advise WA public sector employees and retirees on how to get the most from their GESB accounts. We look at the scheme you hold, what makes it distinctive, and how it fits alongside everything else you own – so the advantages built into your super actually reach your retirement.
Know Exactly Which GESB Scheme You Hold
The strategy that suits a Gold State member looks nothing like the one that suits a West State member. Knowing which scheme you’re in is where good GESB advice begins.
West State Super – The Untaxed Advantage
West State Super closed to new members in 2007, so if you hold one you joined the WA public sector before then. It operates as an untaxed accumulation scheme, which means contributions and earnings generally aren’t taxed while they sit inside the fund.
The practical consequence is significant. West State members are generally measured against an untaxed plan cap rather than the standard annual concessional contribution cap that applies to ordinary super funds. For members in a position to use it, that opens up contribution flexibility most Australians never get access to – particularly in a year with a large one-off income event.
Gold State Super – A Defined Benefit Built on Your Career
Gold State Super closed to new members in 1995. It’s a defined benefit scheme, so your final benefit is calculated from your salary and years of service rather than from investment markets. That makes it remarkably steady, and it also means the levers that improve your outcome are completely different from a market-linked fund.
Member contribution rates, periods of unpaid or part-time service, and the timing of your exit all feed into the final number. Those are decisions worth modelling properly, and worth modelling well before you finish up.
GESB Super – The Current Scheme
GESB Super is the taxed accumulation scheme available to eligible WA public sector employees today. It offers investment choice across a range of options, and the same principles that govern any accumulation fund apply – contribution strategy, investment selection, insurance and consolidation all move the needle.
Retirement Income and Transition to Retirement Pensions
When you stop working, or start winding back, GESB’s pension products become part of the picture. How and when you move from accumulation into a pension, and what happens to any untaxed component when you do, is one of the highest-stakes decisions a GESB member makes.
How we can help
GESB Super Advice Perth
Here’s what working with us on your GESB super looks like:
- Confirm what you’re actually holding. We identify your scheme, your components, and the features and caps that apply to you specifically.
- Build a contribution strategy that fits your scheme. For West State members that can mean using the untaxed plan cap deliberately rather than by accident. For Gold State members it means getting your contribution rate and service history right.
- Plan the exit before you need it. How a GESB benefit is treated depends heavily on when and how you take it. We model your options across different timings so the choice is an informed one.
- Weigh a rollover properly. Moving out of West State is a one-way door – the untaxed status doesn’t come back. We make sure that decision is made with the full picture in front of you.
- Coordinate super with everything else. Your GESB account works alongside your investments, your property, your insurance and any Centrelink entitlements. We plan them together, and work with your accountant where your tax return is involved.
- Keep pace with the rules. Superannuation legislation shifts regularly. We keep your strategy current as caps, thresholds and scheme rules change.

If you’ve spent your career serving Western Australia, your super reflects that. Our job is to make sure it’s working as hard as you did.
